Faith is the ark of our salvation. When anyone receives Christ God puts the believer in the ark and locks the door behind him. This is the confidence that we have in Christ. He is the Substance and the Security of our Faith. Nevertheless, according to the world's viewpoint, the Bible, in part or whole, is always in disputation. Mockers and scoffers in overwhelming numbers rule the day because "The god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them."[2Cor.4.4]Therefore, they do the bidding of their god, creating idols of worship, seeking [perhaps unwittingly] to bring confidence in Christ under seige.
But my fear as a Christian is not in the enemy's strength, nor for my soul's safekeeping, for Christ has already gained the victory -"For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ with God."[Col.3.3] My fear is in my own spiritual weakness and the waning effectivness of my witness.
Idolatry, if left unattended, will take it's toll on all believers. Like weeds in the flower garden, doubts and unbeliefs will begin to flourish. We can either wait until the weeds become well established, choking the life of the flowers, or we can pull them up daily before they get a chance to take root.
How is this to be done? The answer is no secret - prayer and bible study can clean up the weed patch. Jesus said,"Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak."[Mk14.38] The ancient priests of Israel, in performance of their daily rituals, were commanded to go to the laver [a water basin of highly polished metal] and wash "lest they die"[Ex30.18-21]. This was a commandment of God, a duty to be performed on a daily basis, not once in a while, or when they felt like doing it.
The Bible is our laver, the Word is the water, and prayer is our service.
